Discipling with Jesus
Femi Ojo | 23 April 2023
The phrase “Becoming More Like Jesus,” can be described as a gradual transformation of our lives such that we start to exemplify the nature of Jesus. In other words, when we become more like Jesus, people start to visibly see Jesus’ character traits in us when they observe us or interact with us.
And the first set of people recorded in scriptures who exemplified the character traits of Jesus were His disciples. We know this because there is evidence in how they lived their lives while Jesus was here on Earth and there is even more evidence with what many of them did after the resurrection of Jesus.
So much so that in Acts 11:26 KJV, the disciples of Jesus began to be known as Christians which means Christ like. And even today, many dictionary definitions describe a Christian as a person who exemplifies or follows the teachings of Christ in their lives.
Here are 3 things we can learn from the lives of these early disciples about how they went through discipling with Jesus and how that experience put them on a life trajectory of becoming like Jesus.
1. The disciples made a commitment to follow Jesus.
Matthew 4:18-22 NLT
Action Plan: Make a commitment to give you life to Christ.
2. The disciples learnt everything about Jesus.
Mathew 5-7 NLT
Action Plan: Study the Bible. Be part of a church family and go to church regularly. Consume God-approved curated content. Practice the values that Jesus exemplified.
3. The disciples committed to a lifetime of service to Jesus.
Acts 2:14-36 NLT
Action Plan: Commit to a lifetime of service to the Gospel of our Lord Jesus, and humanity (your family, your community, and your profession).
Final Note: Becoming more like Jesus is only possible through a lifetime discipling experience with Jesus. We need to:
- Make a lifetime commitment to follow Jesus
- Keep learning everything about Jesus
- Commit to a lifetime of service to Jesus.
