The Word of God is God’s inspired words, messages or instructions. It forms the foundation for living a successful Christian life, and it is for that reason that we have been commanded to meditate on it day and night [Joshua 1:8].
The primary sources of the Word of God are through scriptures (The Bible) and through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. However, the Word of God that comes through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit must align with scriptures.
The Bible
- It’s a book containing 66 smaller books
- It has 2 parts - The Old Testament (OT) & the New Testament (NT)
- Its writers are drawn from all walks of life: Farmers, fishermen, statesmen, military leaders, kings, secretaries etc.
- It has multiple translations in different languages
The Old Testament and the New Testament
- The Old Testament is about God’s covenant with Israel, their shortcomings and restoration
- The New Testament is about God’s new covenant made with the blood of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and God’s redemptive plan for mankind.
- In the OT, forgiveness of sin is by shedding the blood of animals yearly, while in the NT, it’s by the shed blood of Jesus once and for all (Hebrews 9:7,12)
- In the OT, Justification is by the works of righteousness, while it is by in the NT (Romans 4:4,5)
Why we need to study the Bible

- It reveals our inheritance as believers to us (Acts 20:32)
- It gives us encouragement and hope (Romans 15:4)
- It gives us confidence to share the Gospel (1 Peter 3:15)
