Success is one of those complicated words or concepts that means different things to different people. For some, it means attaining a desired outcome, like passing an examination or test. For others it means attaining wealth, status or fame.
But to really understand God’s perspective of success, we need to go back to God’s original intention for man and trace it all the way to what God established for us through our Lord, Jesus.
God’s original idea of success for human beings was for them to be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and govern it [Gen 1:28a]. However, as man sinned, and subsequently showed a lack of consistency in following God’s instructions, He had to change His rules for success.
So, God sent our Lord Jesus to the Earth to establish new rules for success, and we find these rules in what Jesus describes as the greatest commandments in Mark 12:29-30.
4 Rules for Succeeding With God
1. God comes first.
Mark 12:29b NLT, Matthew 6:33 NLT
Action Plan: Put God first in every area of your life and in every decision you make.
2. Love [Obey/ Honor / Serve / Worship] God.
Mark 12:30 NLT
Action Plan: Keep reminding yourself of your role as a steward of God’s money. As money comes into your hands, pray to God to give you instructions on how to use it.
3. Develop and take care of yourself.
Mark 12:31 NLT, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NLT, Proverbs 4:5 NLT
Action Plan: Constantly seek wisdom under God’s direction. Feed your mind with the right information. Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Avoid putting unnecessary stress on your life.
4. Develop and take care of others.
Mark 12:31 NLT
Action Plan: Look for opportunities to invest in others in your family, church, community or at work.
Final Note: It’s God’s desire for you to succeed with Him, but for that to happen, you need to put Him first and love Him with all your all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. You also need to keep loving others positively as well as you positively love yourself.
